It is extremely rare to find this 1959 dated hardback signed by the author Richard Collier. What makes it special is that it is dedicated to Flt Lt Bob Wright, personal aide to Lord High Dowding during the Battle of Britain and himself a Nightfighter on Beaufighters. Bob obviously helped Collier with the research of this book and he is mentioned several times in the book and acknowledged as a source of information. It has been made even more special with an original pencil drawing of Sir Tom Pike by Steve Teasdale. Pikes genuine signature has been professionally mounted underneath the portrait. The book tells the story of the night of May10th 1941 when London was targeted by 500 Luftwaffe bombers. That night Tom Pike was on patrol as CO of No 219 Squadron, equipped with Beaufighter night fighters at Tangmere. He soon made his mark, shooting down a German aircraft on his very first patrol and a further three night victories brought him a Bar to his DFC which he had won earlier in the year. Having developed some expertise as a night fighter pilot, it was no surprise to find his next posting being as a Staff officer at HQ Fighter Command with responsibility for night fighters. Tom Pike’s hunt for bombers in the darkness of May 10th in his Beaufighter is described in the book. This book is bumped at the edges and corners. There is some spotting on the end papers but the rest of the book is in very good condition. The dustjacket is whole with light wear but no fading. A great book from the Robert Wright collection.
