This is a jewel in any Battle of Britain collection. This book was written by Hugh Dowding in 1941, just after the Battle of Britain, but he was not allowed to publish it until 1946 as the government thought there was information which could be used by the enemy included in the narrative. The foreword by Dowding was written in 1946 and he talks about the dilemma regarding nuclear weapons. The first section covers current events at the time, the second more about ‘godly’ matters. This book is extremely scarce but what makes it unique is that it belonged to Flt Lt Robert Wright, who was Dowding’s assistant and confidant during the Battle of Britain. Robert Wright was a huge advocate of Dowding and was witness to the way he was treated by the higher command after the Battle of Britain. He was the only author who was given permission by Dowding to write his biography, which Wright did in the 1960’s. Robert Wright has signed the book ( he flew in 85 Sqn with John Cunningham later in the war & became a Guinea Pig under Archibald McIndoe when he suffered burns in a mosquito crash). He wrote many books including Nightfighter with Jimmy Rawnsley and was also a technical advisor for the 1969 Battle of Britain movie. Unique as it is already, the book has been enhanced further with an original pencil portrait of Hugh Dowding by Steve Teasdale. It is a high possibility that Dowding gave the book to Robert Wright as he has obviously used it as research for the Dowding biography - many of the pages have underlined text with symbols/ comments by Wright. The book does suffer from spotting and there is a small chip out of the rare dustjacket. This book is incredibly difficult to find in any condition but the uniqueness of this copy makes it a real one-off.
