This 1941 First Edition was written during the Battle of Britain and published just afterwards by journalist Alexander Berry Austin. Austin was given full access to Lord Dowding’s office during the Battle of Britain. He therefore worked alongside Dowding and his personal assistant Flt Lt Robert Wright, who later wrote Dowding’s own biography. The book has been signed and presented to ‘Bob’ Wright by Alexander Austin in July 1941, just after publication. It is assumed that Wright helped Austin substantially in getting access to the information he required. This is an extremely rare signature as Austin went on to write ‘We Landed at Dawn’, the story of the Dieppe raid, before he was finally killed in action in Scafati, Italy, following the Salerno Landings in 1943. This wartime publication is browning and the spine is faded and bumped. The dustjacket is relatively whole. This book has huge provenance.and has been enhanced further still with an original pencil drawing of Hugh Dowding on the title page by Steve Teasdale. A true one-off.
